What is a good pet for small children?

I’m looking for a pet for my kids (ages 5 & 8) that is low-maintenance, doesn’t need a lot of supplies, is quiet, doesn’t eat a lot, doesn’t smell like pee and they can interact with & play with. Snakes, spiders and cats are out for a start. I have roaming room in my backyard, if the critter can stay out of my garden. Under these limitations, does anybody know of a pet that would fit this criteria (apart from a pet rock, HAHA)? I am a single mom on a budget, so this will have to be a very cheap pet…

A stuffed animal.

5 and 8 are both too young to take full responsibility for an animal. Regardless of how enthusiastic they seem at first (or how much they beg), even the most mature, responsible 8 year old will LOSE INTEREST.

When a child loses interest in a pet, the two most common scenarios are the pet staying in the home and being neglected, or the pet being abandoned. Neither is ideal.

If you get a pet, get a pet for the family. All animals end up being for the family. It sounds like you are looking for a pet that will be practically invisible, which is not a realistic expectation for any animal.

It sounds like YOU don’t want a pet, which is why I’m recommending that you don’t get one at all. There is no such thing as a “children’s pet,” and what it comes down to is what YOU as the parent want.

In your situation, I’d say the best thing to do is just put your foot down, give them a firm “No,” and, if they’re interested in animals, find outlets for that interest that don’t involve getting a pet. I work at a nature center that offers classes and activities and workshops for kids where they get to learn about and interact with animals. Even a trip to a zoo or an aquarium is a great way to nurture their interest in animals without taking a pet in that you don’t want and aren’t able to care for.
