Garage Cabinets for Ultimate Organization

There is an interesting assortment of things that seem to belong nowhere but in the garage, but really are necessary to keep. These can include things like sports equipment, hoses, gardening tools and seeds, projects that really will get finished when the weather warms up again, and so on. It’s nice that you do have this extra room that can hold all of these things, but it also makes for a rather difficult job when it comes to organizing the garage. But, it’s nothing you can’t handle! All it takes is a little determination, and most likely, some garage cabinets.

Of course, it would be nice to have a designer come in and organize your garage perfectly so that not only is everything always in its place, but looks like, well, like a designer put it together. There would be dozens of handy little drawers, expensive tables and racks and doohickeys, and of course, a central color theme that pulls it all together without looking like it’s trying too hard. Good news, though. You don’t need a designer to get your garage looking tip top. Really, some simple elements put together with a little planning and ingenuity can ensure that you’ll always know where to put or find those little things that belong nowhere else.

I’m sure you’ve at least heard about garage cabinets and all the good you can do with them. You may have even felt ambitious one day and come home with lumber and tools, planning to build your own. Chances are, that lumber is still leaning up against the house and the tools have been expropriated to various other projects around the house. There’s just something about the act of actually starting the cabinet-building project that makes it nigh to impossible. Maybe it’s the fact that the work isn’t over when you finish the cabinet- you still have to get it to it’s spot, empty that spot out of whatever is currently occupying it, and then organize said space-filling-stuff and get it into the new cabinet. And if you’re anything like me, the worry that the shelves could break at any time just means the whole project is not worth it.

So, my recommendation to you, is to buy a sturdy set of garage cabinets. It is a purchase you will never regret, and it will make it that much easier to embark on a garage-organizing mission.

When it comes to deciding how many you’ll need, I say as many as you can possibly fit in your garage. Now, that might sound a little bit extreme, but trust me. You buy one or two, and it is not going to be enough. Things will be spilling out every time you open the door, and it will really not do much to contribute to fulfilling your life-long dream of an organized garage. Not only that, but it makes your garage look more uniform and orderly just having a whole wall lined with identical garage cabinets. When it comes time for other organizational units, like racks and hangers and tables, place them on another wall to keep your “tidy-ers” looking tidy themselves.

There are very few things that aren’t suitable for storage in garage cabinets. So very few, in fact, that I don’t think it necessary to give them any more mention here. Some of the vast range of things you will keep in them, though, require just a little extra attention. Clothes, in particular. Fabric absolutely must be kept clean and dry. No packing away winter clothes without washing them and making sure they’re completely dry. They should be kept in sealed plastic containers or tubs. This goes for any clothing you’re storing for any amount of time, be it seasonal, heirloom or even Halloween costumes.

I use my garage cabinets for keeping a few months worth of food on hand at all times. It’s a perfect storage location because the garage is always cool and dry. The only thing to watch for with storing food is to make sure it’s sealed up in case there’s a rogue mouse who finds his way into your garage, or something like that. Don’t store a loose paper bag of flour on a cabinet shelf- everything should be tucked into plastic containers.  That being said, it’s a great idea to find small plastic containers that slide easily onto and off of your cabinet shelves that you can store small food items in.

A few garage cabinets really can turn your garage into just what you’ve been imagining. The only advice I have left to give you is, get started! You will love the results.
