Can you grow a potato in mashed potatos?
If you fill a pot with mashed potatoes. plant the potato seed, and water as usual.
will it work?
If you planted a POTATO in mashed potatoes and kept the mashed potatoes moist and allowed for drainage so that the roots of the new root system would not get soggy, it will grow.
Think hydroponics.
All you need os a growing medium (the mashed potato is used in place of peat or pebbles), water and nutrients. As long as you add fertilizer when you water the potato, it will grow fine. Once the potato begins to sprout above the surface, you also need light
