If you would like to bring a fresh look to your garden with the change of every season without having to replant, think about growing wild. Although wild flowers are naturals, they may present some problems when cultivated in a garden. Weeds will be a problem in your wildflower garden. You must stay on top of the weeds as much as you can or they may end up smothering your flowers. The best technique for removing weeds is to prevent them from seeding in the first place. Prior to planting your wild flower seeds, rid your flowerbeds of weeds and till the land very very well.
Since wild flowers are seasonal, in the peak of the season they are spectacular, but as the season reaches its end, they becoming progressively duller. Besides being seasonal, wild flowers are also classified as perennials, annuals and biennials. Perennials bloom throughout the year. Annuals have one season every year and biennials will bloom every two years. In deciding which flowers to include in your garden you should consider whether the flowers are annuals, biennials or perennials. Perennials which bloom throughout the year should represent a portion of each seed batch.
In planning your wild flower garden, intersperse flowers from one season with those of another season. You must also see to it that perennials are included in the set for each season. This way you will ensure that your garden will be alive with brightly blooming wild flowers all throughout the year. Each patch of your garden should contain representative flower species from all floral seasons. Constant watering of perennials ensure that they retain their blooms throughout the year. You may also find it necessary to re-seed your annuals and biennials to maintain good flowering.
Wild flowers are naturally adapted to their environment and are sturdier, more resistant to insects and the diseases that prey on cultivated flowers. Therefore, another factor which should affect the planning of your flower patch is the type of flower that will thrive in the type of the land you have allotted for it. This will make it much easier to cultivate them since you need only supplement their natural tendency to take root and bloom in the selected environment.
Planting wild flowers in your garden attracts bees, butterflies, songbirds and hummingbird. This will help to add tot eh beauty of your home and garden by increasing the presence of nature in your life for both you and your guests.
Just before planting your flower seeds, you may need to make sure that they germinate. Seeds are thickly coated with a resistant layer of woody material. You will need to enhance the permeability of this woody material in order to facilitate water penetrating into the seed easier. There are several methods used to prepare seeds for dissemination. One is to rub them lightly between two pieces of sandpaper. This is called scarring the seed and it thins out the seed cover for water absorption. Another method is to pour hot water on the seeds and to leave them soaked for one night prior to dissemination. A last popular method keeps the seeds moist, softening their protective cover and making them more permeable to water.
