Container VS. In the ground Veggie gardens?
Hello, I am going to start my first garden and I am still debating on if I want to take a spot in the back yard (full sun) or use containers for my vegetables. Why is there this new craze about containers….which one is better and why? The internet is a wealth of information but I am a book girl, does anyone know of a great book for growing vegetables/gardening? Any other information is welcome!!! Thanks!
Well, as with anything, there are pros and cons to each. A yard plot of any decent size would allow you to grow far more things, such as melons and cucumbers and things that like to ramble. You’d probably have to water it less, as containers can dry out fairly quickly and usually need watering every day (unless you sprang for self-watering containers). The pros to a container garden are they’d probably be less work to set up and you could place it as close to the kitchen as space will allow.
If you do opt for a plot out in the garden, I’d suggest going with raised beds. It offers many of the same benefits of container gardening (easy to work soil, no heavy digging if bring in a good growing mix) but on a larger scale.
For many years, my gardening bible has been the “Organic Gardener’s Complete Guide to Vegetables and Fruits), available here: http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Gardeners-Complete-Vegetables-Fruits/dp/0878573860
Happy gardening.
