Low Maintenance Indoor Vegetable Gardening

Indoor vegetable gardening can be a great way to grow your own food and to add beauty to your home. With the right technique, you can grow an amazing amount of food in a very small space. Not only is this technique highly productive, it is also very low maintenance, and provides a shocking bonus.

What I am talking about is aquaponics, and it is changing the way many people are growing food, and is wonderful for an indoor garden. Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. Before you start to think this sounds complicated, it really is not. Hydroponics is a way of growing plants in nutrient rich water instead of soil, which can be a little complicated, but won’t be with this technique. Aquaculture is farming fish. Hydroponics can be a little complicated and it has some disadvantages, but don’t worry, you don’t have to deal with that. And aquaculture is surprisingly not that complicated, aquarium fish are a very common pet. Millions of people in this country already enjoy raising fish. What does this have to do with indoor vegetable gardening? This is where it gets good.

One of the problems with hydroponics is supplying the plants with plenty of nutrients. Most of the time these nutrients will come from chemical fertilizers. For organic gardeners, this will not do. With aquaculture, one of the biggest problems is filtering out and disposing of fish wastes from the water. With aquaponics, an amazing thing happens when the two systems are combined, both of these problems disappear.

The wastes that the fish produce just happen to be rich in the nutrients that the plants need. And plant roots are great at filtering the water and removing these wastes. When you combine the two, you get a complete system that for the most part takes care of itself. The result is a highly productive organic garden that you don’t have to fertilize. And healthy fish that can add beauty to your home and even provide you with fish to eat.

That is the surprise bonus. Fish like tilapia, catfish and many other food fish are commonly being grown with these types of systems to provide fresh organic fish to go with the fresh vegetables. The one thing you do have to add to the system on a regular basis is fish food. But the cost of the food will be returned with the fish it produces, when you consider the cost of buying fish in the market. Or if you want to grow your own fish food, that takes care of that expense. But if you don’t like the idea of eating your fish, you can just let them live a long healthy life while they take care of your garden.

This type of system may sound complicated but, the fish side of it is no more complicated than having a home aquarium. And the plants will be easier to plant and maintain than growing normal potted plants. These systems are also inexpensive and easy to set up.
